“THE LAW IS A HASS”

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —It appears that an accused person in the north has been allowed by Mr Justice Callan to make use of certain money's, which he is accused of having dishonestly obtained, in order to pay an expert to defend him against the charge. It is strange that there is no mention in your report of any stipulation by the judge that the accused should inform his .solicitor where the money in question came from. If it was honestly obtained there would be no difficulty whatever in satisfying the Crown that such was the case. A man may be in doubt as to where he got the cash in his trousers pocket, but when it coitjcs to hundreds of pounds any honest person should be able to state instantly the source of the wealth. And is it so necessary that the professional gentlemen concerned should be paid in advance? And what “disbursements could there be on. behalf of the accused. The matter appears to me to border on the farcical. —I am, etc.. Flapdoodle.
