JUBILEE INSTITUTE BAND

ENJOYABLE SUNDAY CONCERT There was a Jarge audience in the Town Hall last evening when the band of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind presented an extremely enjoyable concert. The Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) extended a welcome the members of the band, Lieutenant G. VV. Bowes, the bandmaster, and Sir Clutha Mackenzie, the director of the institute. In reply. Sir Clutha expressed his warm appreciation of the work of the local Advisory Committee of the institute, the Commercial Travellers’ Association, who made the care of blinded soldiers its special work, and the Auckland Club, which had also generously aided the institute. The items, which were enthusiastically received, included the march “ Dauntless,” the hymn "Deep Harmony,” and the novelty two-step "The Teddy Bear’s Picnic,” by the band, organ solos, St. Anne’s Fugue, and Prelude in B fiat (Bach), and “Beceuse” (Maugham Barnett), by Mr Jqseph Papesch, the cornet duets “ Badinage ” and “ Sleepy Hollow Tune,” by Allan Morton and Julian Lee, sea chanties “Shenandoah,” “Fire Down Below,” and “ Billy Boy.” sung by the baud, with Mr Papesch as soloist, and the euphonium solos “Land of Hope and Glory ” and "Novelty, Modern, and Farmyard Imitations,” by Tutnai Taraewa and the band. Julian Lee played the piano solo “ Esmerita ” and “ Thoughtful,” and the cornet solo, “ The Lost Chord,” was presented by Tom Taylor, with organ accompaniment by Mr Papesch. Mr James M'Guire gave a Braille reading, and the Institute Dance Band played “ Russian Medley ” and “ Scottish Medley.” Mr Joseph Papesch also presented the piano-accordion solo “ Largo,” by Handel, and Allan Morton played “ Hailstorms,” a cornet solo. The concert concluded with fine performances by the band of “ Golden Valley ” and “ Colonel Bogey.”
