RUNAWAY CAR

A REMARKABLE ACCIDENT FOUR YOUNG WOMEN INJURED (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 25. Four young women were knocked down when a car out of control mounted the footpath in Willis street to-night, and were taken to hospital with injuries. The accident happened in a most unusual way when the city was crowded with shoppers and at a place where pedestrian traffic was dense. The driver of the car was Frank Leslie Rossiter, a public servant. He had driven along Manners street to the intersection with Willis street, where he was held up by the traffic lights. When ho attempted to proceed, the engine stalled and could not be restarted with the selfstarter. The vehicle being on the tramlines obstructing the traffic, two bystanders agreed to “give a push.” They pushed before the driver was in his seat, and, getting on the grade of Willis street, the car ran away with the driver standing on the running board steering as best he could and attempting to reach the hand brake. The car, a six-cylinder sedan, gathered way as it ran down the street crowded with late-night shoppers and other traffic, and knocked down several pedestrians. The injured were: Miss D. Weller (broken shoulder and shock), Miss C. Sharpe (head injuries), Miss P. Burt (shock, discharged from hospital tonight) and Miss K. M’Neillis (wound on head, discharged from hospital tonight).
