(Per United Press Association) TAIHAPE, October 24. For poisoning 104 opossums instead of trapping them Alexander Summers, a farm labourer, was fined £2 and costs in the Magistrate’s Court to day, and the skins were confiscated. The ranger did not press for a heavy penalty owing to the confiscation of the skins. „ CHRISTCHURCH, October 24. An unusual history of war service and adventure was unfolded when Gilbert Kldred, aged 58, appeared for sentence to-day on two charges of indecent assault on a girl. Kldred claimed to have boon in the retreat from Mons and in the Battle of the Somme, as well as having been a member of one of Shacklcton’s Polar expeditions and Byrd's first Antarctic expedition. Mr Justice Northcroft said there did not seem to he satisfactory proof of the records outlined, and he ordered reformative detention for three years. He also recommended that prisoner’s mental state be investigated.
