NAVAL DESERTERS

SURRENDER TO AUTHORITIES DIVE THROUGH PORTHOLE RECALLED. ' (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 22. Two members of the crew of the Diomede, who are alleged to have deserted at Napier about a fortnight ago, surrendered on board the Philomel at Auckland. One was the acting petty officer, who, while under arrest, dived through a porthole and swam ashore in the early morning of October 14, pursued unsuccessfully by the guard, who dived overboard wearing his heavy equipment. The naval authorities point out that when the two men allegedly deserted no orders had been received for the Diomede to proceed on special ■ duty overseas. Both will be dealt with on board the Philomel.
