PACER DEFEATS CYCLIST ' " i (Per United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, August 25. In a challenge match for £IOO a side of one mile at the Addington trotting ground on Saturday Mr J. R. M'Kenzie’s horse Taxpayer beat H. G. Watson, the champion cyclist. From a flying start, Taxpayer took the lead passing the stands, where Watson tucked in behind and trailed him until the straight was reached. There was a great tussle over the last furlong, Taxpayer beating the cyclist by a head. The sectional times ’were: Two furlongs, 34sec; half-mile, Imin 9 2-ssec; six furlongs, Imin 46 l-ssec; full distance, 2min 17 l-ssec. In a walking race of one mile, F. W. Dukes, the Canterbury champion, easily beat the trotter Fairyland in lOmin 17sec.
