The Macrae’s-Moonlight Womens Institute met in the Coronation Hall on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs 1 . Hay presided. The motto was Give us courage, gaiety, and a quiet mind, and the roll call “What I would do with £2. A successful bazaar was held on Saturday night in aid of funds for the institute. Hostesses for the afternoon were Misses Phelan and Ann 0 Connell.

Mrs G. Bugden presided oyer the monthly meeting of the Waianakarun Institute. The motto was “ Search others for virtues; thyself for vices, and the roll call “How we can improve on our next birthday party. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr and Mrs Ross M'Kerrow and Mf nn( l Mrs Andrew MTverrow in their recent bereavement. The competition for the day, A dainty handkerchief.” was won by Mrs D. Bugclen with Mrs G. Bugden second. Hustles were: Mesdames Neil Ross and G. Rugden. Mrs J. Hutton, sen., was in charge of the social half hour.

The Waitati Women’s Institute met in the Waitati Hal! on Tuesday. The roll call was, “Uses of stale bread. The competition, “A child’s dress made from an adult’s,” wag won by Mrs Faulds, with Mrs R Clark second. A demonstration on “Making and re-covering eiderdown quilts” was given by Mrs Don, who also showed a worked table cloth. The hostesses were Mesdames Briscoe, Burrell, and Blacklaws, sen.

The Duuback Institute met on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Kelly presided. The roll call was, “What I should like on the next six months programme. Judged by Mesdames Lee and Littterton, the'competition, “Puff pastry,’ was won by Mrs Matheson, with Mrs Stone second and Mrs Murray third, Mrs Stone gaming first place and Mrs Murray second in the short pastry section. ihe social half-hour was supervised by Mrs Stanley, and there followed a demonstration in “ The making of pine-needle baskets by Miss Scollay. The Dramatic Circle contributed a play, “The March Wedding. The hostesses were Mesdames Denmead, MUntosh, and Farquharson, and Misses M'lntosh and Denmead.

The Taieri Institute met in Kinmont Hall on August 15.' The president (Mrs Kirkland) presided. The motto was “Wise women gain their ends by what they leave unsaid.” Mrs Williamson gave an account of her visit to the Dominion conference. A representative of the Singer Sewing Company gave a demonstration. The competition, 1 A knitted tea cosy,” was won by Mrs Williams. The hostesses were Mesdames Leishman, H. Hamilton, Borrie, and A. Brown, and Miss Knott.

The Stirling Institute met with Mrs M'Crorie presiding. "It is wiser to put up a fence at the top of a precipice than to maintain an ambulance at the foot of it ” was the motto. The monthly meeting of the Goodwood Institute met in the hall on Wednesday. Mrs Ireland presiding. The motto was “We ourselves are better served by serving others best,” and the roll call “ Uses of onions.” The competition, “Apron Parade,” was won by Miss Dickson with Miss Hancock and Mrs Turnbull second (equal). The hostesses were Miss Hancock and Mrs Walker.

The Waitahuna Institute met on Friday. The motto was “Acting without thinking is like firing without aiming.” The roll call was “ Suggestions for future demonstrations.” The competition was “Any article which had been the subject of a demonstration during the last 12 months.” The prizes were: Senior, Mrs Quilter; junior. Miss E. Crump. A “Local Surnames” competition, prepared by Miss K. Vanstone, was won by Miss R. Walker. The demonstration was “ Barbola Work ” by Miss Hopkins, of Lawrence. Hostesses were Mrs Peat and Misses M. and E. Ryan.

Mrs Scully presided at the monthly meeting of the Moeraki Women’s Institute on Wednesday evening last. After the singing of the ode. the motto for the month, “ A little forethought may save much afterthought,” was read. The roll call, which was “ Uses of ammonia, acetic acid, etc.,” brought forth many helpful replies. A list of resolutions and a dona l tion of £2 was forwarded to the North

Otago Federation. After an enjoyable supper a competition (guessing the contents of bottles by the smell) was won by Mrs Andrew, who received a small prize. The social half-hour was spent in play-reading. The competition for the evening was “ Something out of a yard of" Britway,” and this resulted in Mrs Booth being placed first with Mrs M'Lellan and Misses V, Halpin and W. Watson being equal for second place. The hostesses for the evening were Mrs B. Green and. Miss V. Halpin.

The Kaitangata Institute met on Thursday, and was presided over by Mrs M. Carson, vice-president. The motto was “ Let us leave the world a little better for the work we do.” The roll call was “My best success from the Institute Cookery Book.” Mrs Watson was •appointed delegate to attend the halfyearly District Council meeting in Dunedin in October. A mystery parcel competition resulted in Miss Gibson being first with Mrs M'Aulay second and Mrs Watson third. A birthday party programme was won by Mrs Watson, with Miss Gibson second. Miss Leishman conducted the social half hour, the competition being'the tearing of a rooster from a sheet of paper, Miss Pilling and Mrs M'Aulay were the winners. Mrs M. Carson gave a * demonstration on “ Crayon work as a substitute for embroidery on aprons, duster bags, etc.” Hostesses were Mesdames Clarkson and Neil and Miss Shaw.
