ANGRY WOMEN
EXCLUDED FROM OFFICE DISPUTE WITH POLICE CHIEF The refusal of the New South Whales Chief Commissioner. of Police, Mr Mackay, to admit women in a deputation in Sydney from the Council Against War and Fascism led to a dispute in the corridors of the buildings of the Police Department lately. Seven angry women harangued police officers for' nearly half an hour..
A letter was sent in the morning by special messenger to the office of the council saying that because Mr Mackay had no intention of altering his decision not to allow a torchlight, procession in the streets of Sydney on the night of August .1 as a demonstration against war and Fascism, no good purpose would be served by arranging a deputation.
In the afternoon 17 men and seven women arrived, at Mr Mackay's office. When they were entering his office ■Mr Mackay gave an order that the women must stay outside. The women, who included Mrs A. Holloway, secretary of the women's auxiliary of the Australian Railways Union, who had been chosen as one of the speakers, expressed resentment. One woman shouted that they would not allow Mr Mackay to treat them "like a lot of sheep." It was stated later that Mr Mackay was willing to receive ah application for permission to hold a procession from Railway square to the Domain on Sunday afternoon, and that the deputation had said that that alternative warn acceptable.
