MORAY PLACE CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH

EXTENSIVE RENOVATIONS. Of the leading religious denominations in Dunedin, the Congregational body is the only one that at the present time meets for worship in its original building. The first local services were held in October, 1862, and the church, having been formed, met for worship in the present building situated in Moray place in 1863. From that time many Christian men and women associated with the life of this church have exercised an indelible influence in the affairs of the city. At a special meeting held, last evening it was decided to erect a tablet in the church to honour the memory of the Rev. and Mrs William Saunders, who laboured so faithfully, in the church for 38 yeare, and in the city for about 45 years. It was also decided to undertake the renovation of the church properties, and it is anticipated that this will cost about £IOOO. Mr C. Russell Smith (treasurer) and Mr W. J. M'Faul detailed the work which was required to be done. After discussion, it was decided to attend to certain internal requirements also, including the heating of the church and halls. Committees were formed to deal with the work and finance required, and it was, with much pleasure that those present heard that about half of the required sum had been promised. Schemes will shortly be set afoot for the raising of the remaining portion, and it was decided to ask for a thankoffering on Sunday, August 18, when the present minister, the Rev. Albert Mead, will begin the eighth year of his ministry in the church.
