A HUGE LANDSLIDE

' HEAVY DAMAGE REPORTED THOUSANDS OF TONS OF DEBRIS (Pee United Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 23. With a terrifying roar some thousands of tons of soil and boulders slipped from the cliff face at Stanley Bay last night. The slip affected properties at the g nd of the First avenue and Stanley Point road, owned by Mr R. T. Philson and Mr J. W. Gittos. A substantia) part of the garden frontage was carried away.

City Council workmen were busy today repairing the drain, which slid down the cliff with the debris. The children’s playhouse on the edge of the cliff in Mr Philson’s property was carried away, and fell 200 feet to the rocky foreshore below# being smashed to pieces. A small landing jetty at the base of the cliff was .also overwhelmed by the landslide.

The slip extends over nearly 300 yards, Mr Philson’s property being the most seriously affected. A small tool shed which was some 15 feet back from the playhouse now hangs precariously on the edge of the cliff. About two feet of the building projects over the edge. About 400 feet of the main sewer has been carried away, but a timber spillway hag been built to replace it. Some people living in the’ neighbourhood felt during _ the night what they thought was a slight earthquake. This was apparently the concussion caused by the fall of the hillside.
