TECHNICAL SCHOOL BOARD

* MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Dunedin Technical School Board of Managers was held yesterday afternoon, Mr L. Sanderson presided, and there were also present Messrs H. H. Johnson, C. J. Hayward, J. T. Paul, T. Scott, W. W. Batchelor, and W. G. Aldridge (principal). CORRESPONDENCE. The Education Department forwarded for the board’s approval the plans for the proposed art school in York place.— The plans were approved after regret chad been expressed that the department insisted on the erection of the building in wood. The secretary of the Technical Education Association wrote asking the board's opinion on the desirability or otherwise of holding a conference next month.—lt was decided to reply that in the board’s opinion the conference was not warranted. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT. The principal (Mr W. G. Aldridge) presented the following report for the month of July : Half-yearly examinations have been completed in the month, the actual tests occupying four school days, from June 27 to July 2. The work of the second half-year began immediately the examinations ceased. Arrangements now being made for the usual winter visits of sports teams will enable us to entertain Christchurch teams on the last day of the term, and to travel to Invercargill earlier in the same week. A Count of the school roll made on July 1 shows that, although the total entries reach 846, they ha., dropped to 721, chiefly ..on account of senior pupils having obtained employment. In evening classes a total of 1239 students had entered and 117 had left. i

The two small houses and the house until recently occupied by the caretaker have now been demolished, and the ground is practically cleared. During the month the Special Sites Committee met and agreed that it would be best to build up the three lowest areas to the 213 ft level, which would entail building a new wall at the lowest boundary. Before reaching any definite decision either upon this point or upon the nature of the wall to be built, it was decided to approach the owner of the next section and to find out whether part of that section could be acquired. The report was adopted. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported the following balances Current account of the Bank of New Zealand, £lO6l 13s; Post Office Savings Bank, £l4ll Is lid; Dunedin Savings Bank—Central account £lßl 19s 9d, North account £lB2 ss, South account £lßl 19s.

Monthly payments were due as follows ; —Salaries, £1055 3s 3d; accounts, £348 Is 9d; scholarships, £7B 2s. The report was adopted.
