AMATEUR SWIMMING

OTAGO CENTRE MEETS A meeting ot the Otago Swimming Centre was held last evening, and waa attended by the president (Mr Jenkins), Messrs L. Pickard, B. Kerr, A. Findlay, S. Brown, W. Williams, E. Sonntng, F. E. Forrester, J. MTaggart, D. C. Bannatyne, C. J. Leeden, D. Ihorhson, E. C. Isaacs, W. L. Colvin, and J. 0. Byrnes.

NATIONAL SURF CHAMPIONSHIPS. A letter was received from the secretary of the Otago branch of the New’ Zealand Surf Life-saving Association, requesting the centre to consider a mutual arrangement with regard to the dates for the national and life-saving championships.—A deputation consisting of Messrs H. D. Gillies, D. C. Bannatyne, and A. Findlay waited on the centre in support of the request.—Mr Gillies explained that, according to the rules of the association, its championships must be held during the last fortnight in February. If they were to be held a week after the swimming championships this would make the association’s fixture too late, and if the latter meeting were to be held during the week prior to the swimming meeting swimmers who were competing in the swimming would hardly wish to take part in a surf competition.— To meet the association, it was decided to write to the New Zealand Council asking permission to hold the national swimming championships on February 15, 17, 18, and 19 instead of on February 22. 24, 25. and 26. COUNTRY CLUBS’ MEETING. It was suggested that a country clubs’ championship meeting be held during the coming season at one of the country '•entres, and it was decided to hold a conference of country delegates on the afternoon prior to the annual meeting of the centre to discuss the proposal and select the venue of the meeting.

I In reply to a request to the City Council for permission to hold a street day in aid of the funds of the centre, a letter was received from the town clerk, Dunedin, advising that the next vacant dates would be in January or February.—lt was decided to make application for January 31. A letter was received from the secretary of the Lawrence District High School Expupils’ Sports Club, asking for the centre’s support in a drive to raise funds to build swimming baths for the district.—lt was decided to reply stating that the centre would defer consideration of the matter in the meantime, but would give such assistance as it was able later in the year. A letter was received from the secretary of the North-East Harbour Boating Club advising that the club would place its facilities at the disposal of the centre for the Annette Kellerraan Cup race.— Received. It was decided that the centre's annual prize-giving ceremony be held on August 7. It was decided to write to Mr J. Hore thanking him for his services to swimming. and congratulating him on his selection as a member of the All Blacks’ team, j
