NOTES FROM RICCARTON

(Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, July 23. At Riccarton this morning there were a few useful gallops by horses engaged at Waimate, but nothing outstanding. Impossible ran six mrlongs in Imin 17sec. Wino assisting over thg last live. Heather Glow beat Cleaner over six furlongs in Imin 17 2-ssec, while Pompeii and Dover Castle ran five. Knockfin registered Imin 3 3-ssec for five.

Punchestown and Free Air gave an attractive display in a school over 10 fences. They went at a sound pace and kept close company all the way. Starlight started off behind the other pair and followed them over the first six fences, when he was eased up. Anvil and Giggleswick jumped four hurdles in good style, the former giving a specially smart display. Prince Vai, ridden by his owner, followed the other pair for a round and went on to jump an extra hurdle, but his was not an attractive exhibition. He got round safely but only bucked over most of the obstacles. Another stage has been reached in the work of preparing the steeplechase course at Riccarton for the racing next month. The brush fences have all been built, and the caretaker (Air P. D. M’Nab) is having them trimmed to the regulation shape and height. ' G. Paul brought his pair, Trishna and Kurapae, south after the Wellington meeting. They are quartered at Addington. but they were at Riccarton this morning doing useful work. Marcus Cicero has got through a lot of useful work since he resumed training, but C. Emerson has now put him aside for a spell. The inclusion of Advance Camp in the list of nominations for the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting created some surprise, ns he has not been at Riccarton for some time. He has done some hunting, but J. C. Tomkimon. who had a look at him this week, decided that he was too backward to be worth going on with. Vintage has been a source of some worry lately on account of soreness. It is not regarded as serious, there being no sign of trouble in his legs, and it may be due to a bruised foot. Fortunately lie is well forward, and should require only a few gallops to fit him for a race. The intention is to give him his first run at the Grand National meeting if he is all right. After that an early shift may be made to Australia. In that ease Vintage will go over under the care of J. Campbell. joining the team of the Trentham trainer T. R, George, with Campbell remaining as the special attendant of the Shambles gelding.
