GESTURE OF GOODWILL

PRIVILEGES IN BELGIUM —— # DOMINION COMMISSIONER. As a gesture of goodwill to the Dominion, the Belgian Government has decided to grant to New Zealand’s Trade and Tourist Commissioner in Europe all the immunities and privileges given to foreign consular officers de carriere accredited by their respective Governments. Information to this effect has been received by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr R. Masters, from the Consul for Belgium, M. Armand Nihotte, who, in turn has been instructed by the Belgian Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, M. P. Van Zeeland. Mr Masters, when interviewed, said he had expressed to M. Nihotte the appreciation of the New Zealand Government for this courtesy. The status given to New Zealand’s representative should be of considerable assistance and value in the prosecution of his duties. , Mr G. W. Clinkard. who was recently appointed to the position in question, Mr Masters said, would leave New Zealand in September, and would s hand over the duties of his present office as Secretary for Industries and Commerce and general manager of the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts and Publicity, to bis successor, Mr L. J. Schmitt, at the end of the month.
