APPEALS FOR PEACE
IN BELFAST CHURCHES MANY FAMILIES LEAVING (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) BELFAST, July 21. Armed men forced their way into the house of John Hamill, seriously wounding him. Appeals for peace were heard in all Protestant and Catholic churches today.
The estimated damage and loss through last week’s riots is between £40,000 and £50,000.
Hundreds of families have fled from the disturbed areas. Those remaining live in a state of terror and bolt and bar themselves indoor early in the evening. The police have begun raids tor arms throughout the city, and soldiers with fixed bayonets are stationed at many points behind a new type of wire barrier. MAN SHOT BY SNIPER BELFAST, July 22. (Received July 22, at 10 p.m.) Edward Scarlett was shot dead during a renewal of fighting at Newtonards road. Apparently he was the victim of * a sniper concealed in a gateway. Several buildings were set on fire at Clones on the Free State border. The house of William Meighan, a member of the British Legion, was attacked, the windows being smashed. ' At Limerick a crowd, in the course of an anti-Protestant demonstration, stoned six shops and two clergymen’s houses, and smashed the windows of a church, a Masonic hall, and the Young Men’s Christian Association’s building before police dispersed them. ' Catholic priests condemned the outrage.
