PROHIBITION v. LICENSE

TO THE EDITOR ' Sir,— ln Saturday’s Daily Times was published the report of a meeting in favour of prohibition. The agitation occurs at intervals with the usual quotations of figures and comparisons. The people of New Zealand have had a very fair chance of experiencing the result of 6 o’clock closing, which has not been quite clear of underhand trading and abuse of indulgences. An honest sale of spirits and wines is necessary if the purity and quality of the liquors are to be maintaned. Prohibition means one law for the rich and another, for the worker, who cannot afford a private cellar. If stands for tyranny. The power to purchase any article honestly' should be maintained. We need temperance which every self-respecting individual practises.—l am, etc., I. S.
