PALMERSTON Rugby Football There was a poor attendance at the local show grounds on Saturday, when the North Otago juniors played Eastern Districts eenior B team. After 20 minutes of bright play, Kitchen followed up_ and crossed, but lost possession, and North Otago forced. Following a scrum in the home twenty-five Mahoney obtained, and scored close to the posts. M'Phail converted, and the score at half time was North Otago 5, Eastern Districts nil. On the resumption of play Dalgleish took play into the visitors twenty-five with a good dribbling rush, but North Otago again cleared, and, after a fast passing rush Hunter scored under ( the posts. M'Phail again converted, making the score North Otago 10 points, Eastern Districts nil. Dalgleish just failed with a penalty kick; and again Hunter, the visi' tors' fast wing, broke away, and, after a dazzling run, scored. M'Phail converted. Eastern Districts rallied, and M'Gregor, receiving from Dalgleish, dived over. Aiteheson converted, making the score: North Otago 15, Eastern Districts 5. After desultory play Hunter, with another fine rim, crossed foe a try, which M'Phail again converted, making the final score: North Otago 25 points, Eastern Districts 5 points. Mr Ward was the referee. . .

South Canterbury, at Timaru.—lt was agreed to accept this date and to try to arrange the Waitaki match at Waimate on August 31.—The insurance scheme was reported to have been excellently supported at its inception on Thursday. The annual general meeting of the Waimate Automobile Association was held on Saturday. The election of ofhcers resulted as follows:—President. Mr W. L. Geddes (re-elected); vice-presidents, the Rev. J. Hay and Mr J. Dempsey; committeeMessrs E. J. Meredith, J. I. Hayman, T. B. W. Hamilton. M. M'Rae, J. Smlllie, J F. Rathgen, A. W. Good. J. Better, E. H. Engibrecht and D. M. Gardiner. The annual report stated that the year commenced with a credit balance of £lßl 14s 4d. and closed with a credit balance of £209 Os 4d. The free road service had been successfully inaugurated during the year. Reciprocal arrangements had been made with all the associations' of the South Island and with most of those in the North, Island. So far the scheme seemed to be working satisfactorily. Sign posts had been maintained in first-class order and bridges on the Gorge and Main South roads had been equipped with reflectors. During the year 27 new members had been elected, but six had resigned. The Borough Council's camping grounds had been maintained in good order and had been well patronised. Regret was expressed at the loss suffered in the deaths of Mrs M. B. Menzies. and Messrs W. Hayman, J. Baikie and I. Culhbertson. all of whom had been, members for many years.

It was resolved that the name of the association be changed from the Waimate Automobile Association to the Automobile Association (Waimate). Four new members were elected. At a committee meeting of the Automobile Association, prior to the general meeting, it was reported that the symbolic sign erected near Mr M'llwrick's property, Otaio. was not visible at night. and more protection was needed. It was left to the incoming committee to investigate. The president reported that reflectors had been placed on all the bridges nn the Main South road a.nd Goree road. Signs had been erected in the Redcliffs district and on the Main road.

RANFURLY , Curling The annual Baxter \ Cup niatch 'wa« played at Naseby on Friday last. - The, ice "was in fairly good condition, but became very tricky towards mid j day. The Baxter Cup was one of the main competi-* tions in Dutiedin when curling Was played there on artificial ice; It was presented by Mr David Baxter in the year 1879. About the year 1882 it was Won by a Naseby club, and has b,een held there ever since. Four clube were represented in the match held on Friday, each entering two teams. The cup Was won by Mount Ida With six points, followed by Central Otago four points (second), Naseby four points (third), and Ranfurly two pipnts (fourth). Miniature Rifle Shooting , The Ranfurly Miniature Rifle Club held its weekly shoot on Thursday night, when thefe Was a good attendance of members.
