KUROW NOTES

BRIDGE CLUB. i. The fourth series of games held by the Kurow Bridge Club took place on Friday laet. There was an excellent attendance, five tables, being engaged; and a very enjoyaible evening was spent. The .highest scores for the evening were secured by Mrs C. M. Newton and Mr R. C. Thompson. DANCE AT VALLEY. .A very enjoyable dance was conducted by the Haka Valley Station staff on Thursday last. The proceeds were in aid of the Kurow Anglican Church. There was an excellent .attendance from the surrounding districts. The music was supplied, by Messrs J. Richardson and O. Stevenson,, and the supper, served m novel surroundings, was very much enjoyed by all. FLAG 500. The Ladies' Auxuliary of the Church of England held a very, enjoyable flag 500 in the Kurow Hall on Wednesday last. The winners were: Mrs Bert Collins, Mrs Dick Smith, and Mrs M. Law--lor. At the conclusion of the game the players were entertained at supper by the Ladies' Committee. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The Kurow Club travelled to Georgetown on Saturday, and played a very fast and interesting game against the. home side. The match ended in a draw, neither side scoring. , Pirates (Haka) defeated Tokarahi at Tokarahi by 8 points to 6 after a very keenly-contested game. WOMEN'S HOCKEY. The Kurow women's hockey team travelled to Duntroon on Saturday laet, and, after a very interesting game, was defeated by the home team by 3 goals to 2. POLICE COURT. At a sitting of the 'Kurow Police Court on Wednesday last L. Fraser appeared before Mr N. Hayes. J .P., and Mr A. H. Chapman, jun., J.P., charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car, and with driving a car, not .being the holder of a driver's licence, ine accused pleaded guilty to both charees. He was fined £5 on the first charge, convicted and discharged on the second, and was prohibited' from holding) a drivers licence for 12 months. WEEKLY DANCE. The Haka Hall was well filled for the week-end dance. Miss N. Nye's Orchestra supplied the music, and Mr L. Pavelticn carried out the duties of M.C. The proceeds went to the Pirates Rugby lootball Club. , EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. A verv enjoyable euchre party"was held in the Y.M.CA. Hall on Tuesday last. The following, were the iz Mrs T. M'Carthv and Mr R. Smith l.Mia T. Butler and Mr W Anderson 2. The proceeds were in aid of the Waitaki Hydro branch of the Labour Party. PLUNKET SOCIETY. The Upper Waitaki sub-branch of the Plunket Society met on Wednesday afternoon to say farewell to kurse Slater, and extend a welcome to Nurse Davies. Her successor. Mrs T. A. Munro, the president of the branch, spoke very highly of the esteem in which Nurse Slater was held. Nurse Slater had been eight years in North Otago, and two years and a-nalt in the country district, where serving a large territoiv extending from Glen Lyon to Herbert, she had to travel on an average'7oo miles every month. Mrs Munro, on behalf of many well-wishers, handed to Nurse Slater a cheque, and wished her every success in her new district. £urse Slater, who will take up duties m North Auckland, suitably returned thanks Mrs J S Adams, on'behalf of the ladies or the southern portion of the district, spoke highly of the nurse's abilities, and Mis Allan Chapman, on behalf of the northern part of the district, endorsed the remarks of the previous speakers, and said now much the work of the nurse was appreciated. Nurse Davies briefly thanked those present for the very warm welcome she had received. Members of th e Plunket Society at Waitaki Hydro met on Thursday last to tender a farewell to Nurse Slater. The president of the Hydro Committee (Mrs L S. Payne), on behalf of the mothers of the district, presented Nurse Slater with a pair of brass book-ends and two books as a token of appreciation of her good work. Mrs Payne thanked her also for her care and attention to the mothers at the Hydro, and wishei her every success in her new appointment. Occasion was taken to welcome Nurse Davies, who will fill the vacancy. Nurse Slater suitably thanked thp mothers for their gift. Mrs T. A. Munro spoke of the value of the Plunket-system, and

of what great assistance it had been to Dr D. G. M'Millan when the camp was at the height of its activity. . Several members of the Kurow Committee were present and added their good wishes. HARE SHOOT. A very successful hare drive was conducted on Mr W. P. Cameron's property at "The Swamp," Wainui, on Saturday last. There were 19 guns present, and a bag of approximately 200 hares were secured. EUCHRE PARTLY. A very enjoyable euchre party and dance in aid of local school funds was held recently at "Asheridge," Hakataramea Valley. Cards occupied the early part of. the evening,, the prizes, given by Mr O. Trice, being won by Mrs J. Sgnith and Mr C. Cunningham, and consolation prizes by Mrs A. M. Fraser and Master J. Pringle. After supper, dancing was indulged in until a late hour, excellent music being provided by Mr O. Stevens. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr F. Andrews.
