INDIAN HOCKEY TEAM

ARDUOUS NATURE OF TOUR' CRITICISM BY AN OFFICIAL (Peb United Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 19. The belief that ‘the Indian hockey team’s tour of New Zealand was made unnecessarily strenuous is held by the comanager, Mr G. Gupta, who said he did not know of any other team which had had to undergo such physical and mental strain. He contrasted their programme of 29 matches in 10 weeks with the All Blacks’ 28 matches in three months and 20 days. There would be 29 All Blacks, but the Indians numbered 16. The team had had to play three matches within aradius of 40 miles —at Hamilton, Mon in.ville, and Te Aroha. Surely it would have been possible to allow the team to stay at Hamilton as headquarters and send the teams from there.instead of all haying to go to the three places. Mr Gupta said he wished to correct a report emanating from Christchurch that the team had been indulging in too many extras at the expense of the Hockey Association. It was a stupid and irresponsible statement. The team had not exceeded its rights in any direction, but had willingly paid many expenses that should have been carried by the Hockey Association Another point was that no member of the team drank liquor. They drank a lot of milk. THE FINAL TEST MATCH NEW ZEALAND TEAM ANNOUNCED. (Pee United Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 19. UNIVERSITY TEAM FOR FIJI (Peb United Press association) CHRISTCHURCH, July 19. The following New Zealand. University ■ hockey team has been selected to tour Fiji:— j Goalkeeper, L. R. Hercus (Otago);, full-backs, R. D. M'Ewan (Victoria), S. M'Donald (Canterbury); half-backs—F. H. Stewart (Victoria), C. V. Walter (Canterbury), E. S. Hobson (Otago), F. L. Newcombe (Victoria); forwards —R. J, Walton (Otago), K. N. Strothers (Massey College), H. B. Lawry (Massey College), E. R. Huston (Canterbury)', H. C. Ford (Canterbury), L. B. Deney (Victoria). The team will sail by the Niagara on August 20, and will play five matches in Fiji.
