NOTES FROM RICCARTON

(Special to Daily Times) • CHRISTCHURCH, July 1. Several Riccarton .trainers took advantage of the good conditions to school their horses this morning, when some interesting work was witnessed. Royal Limond and Free Air started together, and after jumping two fences were joined by Monastic. They were in line at the next fence, but at the double Free Air was outjumped by the other pair and was then pulled up, having gone as far as intended. Royal Limond and Monastic continued together over another round. Royal Limond thus jumped 10 fences, Monastic eight, and Free Air five. Royal Limond gave a capable display, going straight at every fence without a semblance of a mistake. His performance demonstrated the vast improvement he has made since he started on his racing campaign in the North Island, and he is going to play his part well in other important steeplechases during the winter. D. O’Connor will take him north on Thursday night, and he may be schooled at Trentham on Saturday. With hie superior pace Monastic found no difficulty in going with Royal Limond, while his jumping was safe and sure all the way. When he has had a little experience in public he should win a good steeplechase, and may prove worth following in minor cross-country events at Trentham next week. Free Air jumped well, going with her mates up to the double, where she lost ground. She afterwards did strong work on the sand, but moved very short, giving obvious evidence of soreness. Star Raider wag given some education over hurdles. He ran off a couple Of times, but jumped fairly well when taken at the obstacles with a short run. Vitaphone led Isadore over the pony hurdles twice, and also over two big hurdles. Both jumped well, and may race at the Waimate and South Canterbury Hunt meetings. Starlight was sent over three steeplechase fences, jumping well at a moderate pacg. She is booked to race in the hunters’ events at Waimate and South Canterbury. , , ~ Polydora, who had jumped four hurdles well on Saturday, was out again this time to school over six flights. She went at each obstacle straight and fast, putting plenty of dash into her work. - She got a trifle close' to the sec.ond and chanced the fifth, but taken on the whole it was an attractive display- She has had only two schools,; at Riccarton, but she has done a lot of jumping in the trainers paddock. H. Nurse intends to give her some more education later in the week, probably in company. She may go to Trentham for the second and third days. Judged on her display this morning she has excellent prospects of taking high honours as a hurdler. RACING IN FRANCE THE GRAND PRIX DE PARIS. (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) PARIS, June 30. A bold British effort to win the Grand Prix de Paris, run- over one mile and seven furlongs at Longchamp, just failed, Baron Edouard de Rothschild’s three-year-old bay filly Crudite (by La Ferina —Vitamine) beating Mr Arthur Armstrong’s William of Vallance by a short head.
