NOTES FROM WELLINGTON

(Special to Daily Times)

WELLINGTON, July 1. W. J. Bowden has been engaged to ride Yalpeen in his engagements at the Wellington meeting. ; ■ Riotous will be ridden in the Wellington Steeplechase by J. M‘Rae. He is progressing satisfactorily in his prepara,Tudor is also working well, but in his case his recent trouble may find him a trifle short of the necessary condition. At Trentham B; H. Morris will ride Orapai, Pladie, and Round Score. At Wellington W. J. Broughton will be on State Bank. Good Hunting, Might, and Maine; P. Atkins on Dollar Bill, Refresher, West Tor, and Royal Banquet; R. Marsh on Thane, Astarth, Glenvane, and Bumble; W. E. Pine ou Linguist and Korero.' • s „ . , Transact did not start at Levin as he has had a bit of a “ leg ” since an outing in the hunting field a few v days ago. A. M. Wright is giving him saltwater treatment on the beach at Otaki and hopes to be able to run him at Wellington. Cottesmore ran badly at Levin on Saturday and oh his showing he may not b e sent down to keep his engagements at Trentham. . C. Geiseler had hard luck with Unseen at Levin after, making the long journey from Wingatui. Unseen got out with the leaders at his first start, but. when he struck the turn he was all at sea and drifted right back. It was obvious that his long stride was unsuited to the track. He did not do much better at his second start, but the worst feature was that he; was very lame in front on cooling off. It looks as if he will be unable to race at Trentham and will need a spell. While the opposition to Diamond at Levin was extremely feeble his display suggests, that ho will be a useful horse over the big counfry. He risked a couple of fences-on Saturday, but on the whole he gave a good display of jumping. He is bound to improve and as he has plenty of .pace! he should be worth following in his next few starts. Orapai was one of the fancied runners at Levin who was unable to hit out in the treacherous going. He blew a bit also after the race and he may do better shortly. ■ t . . , , Dollar Bill is a greatly improved hack and he has the added facility of being able to gallop in heavy ground. Mies Hushabye should be improved by her gallop at Levin. She was just short of a race or she > would have run on better. This mare is a great mudlark and looks a good Trentham prosppet Reipar, being by Greyspear, should be able to handle neavy going and he ran a very creditable race at Levin. He was unlucky to meet interference at a critical stage and has only got to repeat that form to win soon. Round Score has Tieen working so well at Awapuni that his complete failure at Levin staggered his followers. Most likely it, was the shifty going, but at no stage was he galloping anything like a horse in form.

Bazaine made his opponents look like “goats” in the concluding race at Levin,, yet Grand Score and Abbey Feale are fair hacks. The turning* course was in his favour, but all the same his form; showed great improvement. Bazaine is a brother to Journet and Golden Chant,} and comes of a good family, being bv Arausio from Conchita, by Boniform— Merry Margaret, by Bezonian —Margaretha. by Birkenhead. He is not engaged the' first day at Wellington, but is in later at the meeting.
