TRAYS FROM NEWSPAPERS

Those lovely papier-mache trays which used to be bo highly treasured and handed down from generations can be made from old newspapers. Tear them up—don't cut them —into pieces about

two inches square. Place them in a good size basin half-full of water, and let them soak for two hours. While the paper is soaking, make a paste with one cup of flour and enough cold water to make a smooth paste, then add boiling ■water, stirring all the time, till it is like cream. Now take an old tray, cover the inside with pieces of soaked paper, being careful that no part is left uncovered; also try to avoid overlapping; press the paper very hard, and it will stick to the tray quite well. Now cover the paper with a layer of paste; after this add another layer of paper, then more, paste; repeat this till you have eight thicknesses of paper inside the tray. Now place in a cool oven; when hard smooth the whole surface with glass-paper. It is now ready to enamel any colour desired." Black is always effective, and a band of blue or pink enamel may be added when the black is quite dry.—An exchange.
