MEETING OF COMMITTEE A meeting of the committee of the Dunedin Competitions Society was held on Monday night, when there were present Messrs J. L. Gardiner (in the chair). G. H. Elliffe, W. F. Abel, E. T. Holier, E. C. Reynolds, J. C. H. Somerville and E. J. Smith. Miss Sybil Baker was reappointed official accompanist for the forthcoming festival. It was resolved that the entry fee for the half-hour entertainment should be reduced to 2s 6d a party. The Dunedin Shakespearian Club wrote offering a prize of £1 Is for the highest marks in the Shakespearian recitations, and two additional prizes of a year's free membership of the club for the winner of the ladies' section and the winner of the men's scetion in the Shakespearian recitation. —The offers were received with thanks. The Otago Law Students' Debating Society wrote suggesting that in the imoromptu speech competition two minutes should be allowed competitors to collect their thoughts.—This was agreed to. It was reported that there was every likelihood of a very satisfactory entry being received for the Bible Class Choir Competition, and it is also anticipated that five or six choirs will enter for the firms choir contest. Members expressed gratification at the interest being taken in these two competitions. It was reported that an endeavour was also being made to obtain entries from the church choirs for the church choir contest. The secretary reported that alterations to the theatre were being carried out. and these should provide much greater comfort for patrons and competitors. Owing to complaints about the setting of the bass solo for the men's scholarship section it has been decided to allow competitors to sing the selection " The Sun God" in the key of D minor. THIS YEAR'S FESTIVAL The thirty-fourth annual festival of the Dunedin Competitions Society will be held in His Majesty's Theatre, and the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall from August 21 to September 7, and present indications point to the festival being one of the most successful in the society's history. It is anticipated that excellent entries will be received for the choir contest, half-hour entertainments, impromptu speeches and for vocal, instrumental, elocution and dancing items. Several new instrumental items to encourage members of the junior orchestras have been included in the syllabus which are also expected to attract large entries. Intending competitors are reminded that entries will close on Wednesday next. Entry forms and programmes are obtainable from Messrs Charles Begg and Co. or from Mr E. S. Wilson, T. and G. Buildings, Princes street, Dunedin. Competitors are requested to send in their entries as soon as possible.
