The demolition of the last remaining portions of the famous city walls of Cadiz, built by the Romans and restored by Alfonso "El Sabio" of Castille in the thirteenth century, has begun. Only the historic and beautiful old gate known as the " Puerta de Tierra" will remain in memory of these walls, which represent ?000 years of Spanish history. The expansion of modern Cadiz has caused the successive destruction of the main portions of the walls and the first demolitions began as far back as 1900. When the first demolition was to be made the Minister of War, General Luque, objected strenuously, and the Prime Minister had to intervene. During the war the British troops in the front line were not at all averse to singing with gusto the German song about " straffing England," and when, last December, British forces moved into the Saar to keep the peace during the plebiscite, they informally adopted the Nazi salute. As the troop trains moved along, reported a correspondent, the soldiers waved to people working in the fields, who gravely gave the Nazi salute. " This," he wrote, " Thomas Atkins immediately adopted and from the frontier to Saarbrucken Hitler was 'heiled' as much from the train as from the railway side." The men quickly settled down in ueir new quarters, and next dav one of the men, meeting a friend ii.'the street, said: "Well, old cock, a merry Christmas and a happy new Saar."
