MASTER CARRIERS
TRANSPORT MATTERS DISCUSSED GOVERNMENT COMPETITION RESENTED (Per United Press Association) NAPIER, April 12. The New Zealand Masters Carriers and Customhouse Agents' Federation met in its annual conference at Hastings today, when a number of remits relative to the conduct of transport operations were considered. The conference decided that when licenses are required for any one route a license should not be given covering 24 or 25 vehicles which can be transferred to any route at any time. The conference passed a resolution to the effect that the time was overdue when the master carriers should be given consideration by being allowed representation on all transport licensing authorities. The executive is to be asked to approach the Government, making definite representations for a practical representative to be appointed, and other transport organisations are to be approached to support the deputation. A remit was carried requesting the removal of the restrictions dealing with exempted areas, which it considered would be a distinct advancement towards the co-ordination of the industry. By 10 votes to nine the conference decided that the * Government be approached to abolish heavy traffic fees, and that kindred transport organisations be asked to co-operate with the executive in presenting the federation's views on the matter to the Government. .four remits dealing with this matter were tabled, and the discussion indicated that the proposal, if given effect to, would have a considerable bearing on various aspects of the industry. It was also decided to endeavour to have heavy traffic licenses transferable from one vehicle to another. .. Representations are to be made to tne Government that it should refrain from entering into competition with local carriers by the free collection of parcels and goods, and also by post offices contracting for the collection ancj delivery of parcels and goods up to a weight of 3cwt. A protest is to be made against what was declared to be the ever-increasing encroachment on private enterprise by the Government and its departments. Ihe support of other organisations, such as the Associated Chambers of Commerce, is to be sought with a view to waiting upon the Government requesting it to retrain from entering into competition on a commercial basis iji'th traders m general.
