You are utterly depraved," declared Mr Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court to-dav. in sentencing David William Cutler Cooper, aged 30. a farmer, of Te Kowhai. to three years' imprisonment for unlawful carnal knowledge and for making a false declaration regarding the birth of his child. His Honor said it appeared that the accused had been living with a woman and had unlawful relations with her daughter, who gave birth to a chiM. The judge added that he had no power to order a flogging. GREYMOUTH. April 12. The di«nute at the Puponga colliery. Nelson, which has lasted for Hi weeks, has been settled. A tonnage payment replaces day wages, the rates being 8d a ton above those in any West Coast mine. Mechanical ventilation i* being installed.
