EXPENSIVE PET

DOG’S COSTLY BITING HABIT To a woman who was alleged to have been crippled for life by a dog bite, damages of £430 were awarded in a High Court case in England recently. She is Miss Lily Bradlaugh Leng, aged 42 hostess at Dorman’s Park Hotel, Lingfield, Surrey, and this amount and costs were ordered to be paid to her by Mrs Charlotte Dodgshon, a widow, ot Wildemere, Dormans Park. Mrs Dodgshon is the owner of a little Belgian griffon dog named Scrap, and Mr Croom-Johnson, K.C., for Miss Leng, related that while Miss Leng was out for a walk with a friend, Scrap sprang at her, dropped its head and bit her on the calf of the leg. “ Such were the lamentable consequences,” stated Mr Croom-Johnson, “ that, whereas before the occurrence Miss Leng used to walk 10 to 12 miles a day, she is now a cripple, and if your lordship accepts the medical evidence to be given on her behalf, virtually ruined for life.” She could now walk only with the aid of surgical boots. Mrs Dodgshon described Scrap as “the most sweet-tempered dog I nave ever come across, and, unfortunately, an awful coward.” Mr Justice Goddard, giving judgment, stated that he was perfectly certain that Scrap was in the habit of running up to people and nipping at their ankles.
