Thursday, April 11. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) ALLEGED THEFT. Leo Raymond M'Callum, aged 21 years, was charged with the theft at Waitati of blankets, clothing and foodstuffs, valued at £2, the property of William Henry Borrie.—Detective Sergeant, Doyle said that the accused was arrested only yesterday and ho required time to make further inquiries. Another charge might be preferred. He understood that the accused had escaped from a mental institution about six months ago. A remand was granted until next Thursday. REMAND GRANTED. Frank limes Dawson, aged 38, was charged with being intoxicated in charge of a motor car. —Mr J. S. Sinclair appeared for the defendant and pleaded not guilty and asked for a remand until Monday.—Senior Sergeant Packer objected to a remand or an adjournment since the defendant had been released the previous evening and had had ample time to prepare his defence. —The magistrate said he saw no reason why a remand should not be granted and acted accordingly. Bail was renewed in £25. FINED £5. Norman Christian Meiuung, aged 26, pleaded guilty to a charge of being drunk in charge of a motor van.—Senior Sergeant Packer said that the defendant was driving his van along Princes street at about 11 p.m. and pulled up near the Octagon. Ho then careered into a car in front of him, and police officers who were on the spot found that he was the worse for liquor. However, it was a border-line case which would not have been detected had it not been for the accident. —Mr A. G. Neill said he agreed with the senior sergeant that it was a border-line case. The defendant had had a bottle of beer at borne and bad thou gone to meet his young lady. He had just touched the car in front of him. but the police were on the spot and decided to take him to the station. Counsel said that in view of this he was justified in asking the court to take the defendant's livelihood into consideration when the question of penalty came up. If his license were cancelled he would be deprived of his livelihood. —Meinuug agreed to take out a prohibition order and was fined £5 and ordered to pay expenses (£2 6s).
