STRANDED IN GALE

THE AQURANIA AGROUND END OF LUXURY CRUISE TUGS’ EFFORTS UNSUCCESSFUL (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, April 11. (Received April 11, nt 7.25 p.m.)

During a gale the liner Aquitania, which was due to dock at Southampton on her return from a Mediterranean cruise, grounded last night at the entrance to Southampton Water. Nine tugs, including the most powerful in Britain, failed to budge the vessel, which lay on the mudbank througliout the night. The attempts will be renewed at the next high tide. Meanwhile, oil and water are being pumped out into barges. All excepting 27 of the passengers eventually elected to quit the ship by tenders in spite of the 60-milc-an-hour gale and the rough sea and arrived at London at intervals during the night, being met by relatives and friends who had been anxiously waiting for hours at Waterloo station.

The passengers included the Egyptologist, Mr Howard Carter, the American lawn tennis player, Miss Elizabeth Ryan, Lady Bateman, and many distinguished people. The children on board were thrilled at the dramatic end to the luxury cruise. When the Aquitania grounded the 1540 passengers were assured that there was no danger. They watched the efforts of the tugs until darkness fell, when the ship presented a brilliant spectacle, being lighted from stem to stern. Many changed into evening clothes for dinner and afterwards danced. When it was finally decided that there was no hope of refloating her before the morning, the passengers decided to leave by tenders. The crew throughout the night was engaged in lightening the ship. VESSEL STILL FAST EFFORTS AT HIGH TIDE UNAVAILING LONDON, April 11. (Received April 11, at 9.20 p.m.) At 3 p.m. the Aquitania was still aground. High tide, the most favourable opportunity for refloating her, has passed.
