LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS
CLOSING OF ROLLS The supplementary roll for the city in connection with the forthcoming local body elections was closed on Wednesday afternoon. In the ordinary course of events the roll would have been closed a week ago, but. it was kept open for a further week following on the decision to hold the elections on May 8 instead of May 1, as had originally been intended. The roll includes approximately 6000 names, and as at the beginning of the week there were some 4500 names on this roll, the extension of time has been availed of by 1500 odd electors. The main roll has 31,714 names, making a total of something over 37,000 names. The supplementary roll for the Borough of St. Kilda, which closed on Wednesday, contains over 200 names more than that for the last election, but a decrease is revealed in the figures for the main roll, which this year contains 4139 names compared with 4623 for 1933. The figures for the supplementary roll for 1935 and 1933 are 750 and 537 respectively, so that the total number of voters on the rolls this, year is 271 fewer than it was two years ago. This is accounted for by the fact that in accordance with the new provisions of “ The Local Elections and Polls Amendment Act, 1934,” many electors who did not vote at the last election were struck off the roll and failed to reapply for inclusion. . LABOUR CANDIDATES. Mr Bryan O’Donnell, president of the Otago Labour Representation Committee, will contest a seat in Labour’s interest on the Otago Harbour Board as well ns .on the City Council and the Otago Hospital Board. Mrs M. Don and Mrs C. M‘Arthur will contest seats on the Otago Hospital Board.
