Bitterly cold weather has brought considerable distress to tfie many varieties of birds and game which inhabit the lakes around Berlin. The fire brigade of the suburb of Spandau were summoned to set at liberty an elderly swan which had become frozen into the backwater in which it had been sleeping. In other cases citizens have gone to the rescue of frozen birds with rowing boats.
