WAGES AND COMMISSIONS OF TAXI DRIVERS

TO THE EDITOR ' Sir, —Relative to Or M'lndoe’s statements concerning the wages and commissions earned by company taxi drivers, and the derisive interjections made thereon, together with other speakers’ references to allegations of sweating and low wages, 1 am instructed by my directors to endorse Cr M'lndoe’s statements as being correct so far as this company is concerned. No driver in our employ receives less, than ten shillings "per day. Even drivers just commencing with the' company are guaranteed not less than ten shillings per day. All drivers, including “spares.” receive, one day off in .each fortnight, and are paid ten shillings for such day off. Uniform and caps are'provided annually at half cost. Certainly at busy times drivers work long: hours, but commissions earned are always commensurate with hours worked.

We employ a' total staff of seventeen persons. All are well paid in every respect. and if the public of Dunedin considers that sweating and low wages are the rule, we are prepared to place a certified statement of wages and commissions earned in the hands of the Council Committee, which can then publish its findings and so quash • immediately the idea of any sweating or low wages being feneral in the taxi business in Dunedin.— am. etc., H. J. Hastie, Manager, Gold Band Service Co., Ltd. Dunedin, April 11.
