TAXI DRIVERS’ WAGES
■' r TO THE EDITOR Sib,— When the matter of regulating taxi fares was before the City Council last evening the statement made by Cr MTndoe that the drivers employed by the taxi companies receive adequate pay was greeted with derisive laughter, and there were _ interjections to the effect that the- drivers are' grossly underpaid; I have enclosed herewith for your perusual a letter from the Department of Labour which sets out that all drivers employed by this company receive wages CB high as, and in some cases higher than, M»y would receive had the award relating to taxi drivers remained in force, and that, where working hours have been exceeded; 1 overtime has invariably been paid. If our company can provide employment for a number of taxi drivers at a rate of pay as high as that ruling when the awards were in existence, receive a reasonable return ourselves for the capital involved in the business, and cater for the public at a reasonable charge, then our action should not lay us open to unfair criticism. —I am, etc., Manager, Silver Fern Taxi Company, Ltd. Dunedin, April 11. [The letter from the Department of Lab our, to which reference is made in the above, is correctly quoted.— Ed. O.D.T.]
