FELLOWSHIP, SCHOLARSHIP, AND BURSARY
MR SHIRTCLIFFE'S GENEROSITY i Pee United Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 12. Lord Bledisloe announced at the State luncheon, at the request of the donor, Mr George Shirtcliffe, the establishment by deed of trust executed on Friday of a fellowship, a research scholarship and a bursary to be awarded annually to university graduates in science, art, commerce, agriculture or law resident in the Dominion. The purpose is to enable students of outstanding ability and character who would otherwise, through lack of means, be unable to do so to continue their studies. The fellowship will be of the value of £250, tenable for two years, and available to graduates holding the master's degree, and is intended to enable the holder to pursue in the British Empire some definite research or advanced study. The object of the research scholarship, which will be of the value of £IOO and will be tenable for one year, is to permit the holder of a like degree to pursue research in the Dominion, and the bursary, of the value of £75, will be open to candidates holding a bachelor's degree,-to enable them to proceed to the master's degree in New Zealand TRUST FUND OF £20,000 METHOD OF MAKING AWARDS. (Per United Press Association i WELLINGTON, March 12. Mr Shirtcliffe's gifts are in the form of a deed of trust to the amount of £20,000. The gift has been vested in the University of New Zealand, which will administer the trust, but the awards will be made by a committee of five, as follows:—The Governor-General, the Chief Justice or a judge of the Supreme Court nominated by the Chief Justice, the Bishop of Wellington, a member of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research to be nominated by that body, and a nominee of the University Senate. The sum at the disposal of the committee will be approximately £BOO a year, and the bursaries will become operative in February, 1930. Provision has been made for the value of each or any bursary to be adjusted according to the financial circumstances of the recipient. Mr George Shirtcliffe, 0.8'.E.. has had a distinguished commercial and public career. He was a member of the Taxation. Committee of 1924, chairman of the Hawke's Bay Rehabilitation Committee of .1931, and chairman of the National Expenditure Commission, 1932. He is best known locally as former vice-chair-man and managing director of A. S. Paterson and Co., a post from which he retired in 1919. Mr Shirtcliffe, who is chairman of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, resides in Wellington.
