PHYSICAL CULTURE

DEMONSTRATION AT Y.W.C.A. An instructive demonstration of the physical education work at the Y.W.C.A. was given last night under the direction of Miss J. Ewing, who graduated at the Dunedin Training College under Mr J. Renfrew White, and who has recently returned from London, where she received further tuition under Miss Searle, director of the Chelsea College of Physical Education. Mrs M. Erie Johnson, chairman of the Health and Recreation Committee, presided. In the course of her introductory remarks, Misß Ewing said that in these days of rush and hustle so much was heard about nervous breakdowns among girb that it was necessary to recall the old saying that a healthy mind could not exist without a healthy body. All that was needed were balance and poise, and, in the physical education classes the aim was to lay the foundation of a healthy and perfectly functioning body. The feature of the programme was the presentation of a junior table of exercises in the newly-introduced Ling system, in which each exercise was designed to bring a particular part of the body into action, thus encouraging the pupils in correct posture, balance and relaxation. Other items demonstrated lunge sets and sports sets. Tap dances, rhythmic ball dances, Russian dances, and a minuet were also presented. At the conclusion Mrs Bejtg congratulated the performers and the instructor on their demonstration.
