LIFE SAVING

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS WELLINGTON TEAMS SUCCESSFUL W. J. JARVIS WINS BELTMEN'S CONTEST r ' (Per United Press Association) c NEW PLYMOUTH, February 24. Wellington teams won both the senior, and' junior life-saving championships of New Zealand at Ngamotu yesterday, and to-day -three of the four teams in the senior finals were Wellington teams. Auckland similarly dominated the march" past championship. Despite the rail dislocation due to floods the public attendance exceeded 5000. The winners of the principal events were as follows: — Senior Championship.—Lyall Bay. Junior Championship.—Maranui. March Past.—Eastern United. Teams' Race.—Lyall Bay. Beltmen's Championship. W. JJarvis, St. Clair. Four-man Alarm. —Fitzroy.

General regret was expressed that it wag impossible to hold .the championships in the surf at Fitzroy, where a good sea was running which would have provided a splendid test, .but the events had to be decided at Ngamotu because the floods on Friday had littered the Fitzroy beach with driftwood and debris. Two heats in the four-man alarm were attempted, but it was seen to be impossible to proceed, as the lines became ' clogged with material, only some of the competitors reaching the buoys. A. J. Ryan (Ohawe) did best in these heats," with D. Shanahan close behind. \ Ngamotu, behind the breakwater, was clear of flood refuse, but there were no -breakers. Milford put up the best performance in the four-man alarm heats, but was ineligible as some of the members were not medallionists. The team s time was 3min 56see. The next best time was registered by Takapuna A, which was second to Lyall Bay in the third heat on points. Lyall Bay and St. Clair impressed most in the all-round work in the heats, and the final was very closely contested by Fitzroy, Lyall Bay, and. St. Clair. Lyall Bay's land work, especially the hauling in, was slightly superior. Lyall Bay and Fitzroy were equal on points, but Fitzroy'a time was 12sec faster, and the team was awarded first place. Shanahan (St. Clair beltman}, who swam most of the way with the breaststroke, was 2-ssec behind Fitzroy. The Eastern United time was much slower than the others, and the team was well behind on P °R. Pelham (Lyall Bay) had the best performance in the beltmen's championship heats, just beating W. Jarvis (St. Clair) to the buoy- after the latter had put vn a great sprintl J. C. Blakely (Lyall Bay) also returned fast time in his heat, which he won fairly easily. First and second started in the final, in which Jarvis reversed the result of the heat. Pelham soon established a lead from Blakely, the latter being somewhat off the course, and after 200 yards Pelham was well ahead, and seemed a likely winner. Over the last 100 yards, however, Jarvis put in a great sprint, overhauling Pelham easily to reach the buoy ssec ahead. Meanwhile, M'Lean had quickened up to beat Blakely and Ryan by one-fifth of a second. Neville (New Plymouth) was the winner of the Junior Race of about 600 yards. Pascoe and Hardy had a close tussle for second place. Very little separated the teams in the Neleon'. Shield heats, a • feature of which was that the two LyaU; Bay teams qualified for the final.. Lyall liny No. 1 had a good draw with ]>. Ryan, patient, and J. C. Blakely, bfeltman, but wa s actually slower than Takapuna with t>. M'Leod and N. Galbraith. Ohawe nad the fastest time in the second heat, but was beaten by Maranui's better all-round work. Lyall Bay No. 2 was only third fastest in the heat, dropping three points, but its work was neat, particularly the hauling in. . It was noticeable that the. Auckland teams lost here. Old Boys, with .the best water work of the heats, won the fourth heat decisively. In the final-, Maranui had the worst of the draw. Old Boys, though having Rimmington, who was tired after previous swims, made up, having Gardiner in the belt. Lyall Bay No. 1 again had a fairly good draw. Rimmington showed good pace on the swim out, but veered to the, right and mistook his buoy. Meanwhile, Williams (Lyall Bay No. 1) had swum, a splendid course and reached the buoy well ahead of the Maranui man, who just beat Old Boys, with Lyall Bay No. 2 we 1 back. The Lyall Bay No. 1 beltman held his lead fairly well, but the Old Boys man caught right up on Maranui. In the hauling in Lyall Bay No. 2 showed fine efficiency. Maranui excelled in the land work with Hughes a superb captain. Lyall Bay No. 1 was a little behind in this department . and the advantage in time made all the difference.

Maranui had an easy win in the Junior Championship, though Old Boys' (New Plymouth's) time was faster. In the haul in, the latter beltman dropped his patient and generally his work was not so good. The following are the results (the winners, whose times are given first in the heats, entered the fihals):— FOUR MAN ALARM. ' First Heat.—St. Clair (B. D. Shanahan) 1, Patea (W. Milliken) 2.
