ST. CLAIR CARNIVAL
SUCCESSFUL CONCLUSION \ It was unfortunate that the weather for the St. Clair Carnival was broken, as otherwise the effort was a great success and the work of the committee has been well rewarded. The carnival concluded on Saturday night, and both in the afternoon and at night there were large attendances and the various amusement devices were well patronised. But even if one did not indulge in dancing, in competitions or in rides on the roundabouts, the promenade was well worth a visit, as it was brilliantly illuminated with coloured bulbs, and the effect of the flood lighting on the water created a beautiful sight. In the afternoon a parade of pet dogs was held, which attracted a large number of entries, and the following prizes were awarded:— Shortest dog: Pat Wakefield 1, Ina Allen 2. Longest dog: Omar Shiel 1, L. Myles 2. Best decorated dog: Magnus Scoones 1, Jim Wren 2. Ugliest dog: Fred M'Lean 1, C. Harold 2. Prettiest dog: D. Early 1, H. Hodgson 2, Best kept dog: Aindrie Ferguson 1, Marie Chetwin 2. Best puppy: Eileen Thompson 1, Alex Thompson 2, Some exhibition whippet races were conducted, but, owing to unexpected currents, the tide did not fall sufficiently low to allow the races to be carried out in the anticipated manner. The treasure hunt kept the children busy for quite a long time before the prizes were won. The final item on the afternoon programme was the life saving act, in which an aeroplane took a leading part by dropping a lifebelt on which the swimmer supported himself until the arrival of the beltman from the shore. One of the roost attractive items during the evening was the burning at sea of a small boat.
