LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS

COUNTY REPRESENTATIVES Mr A. MTnnes had signified his intention of again offering himself as ,a candidate for the Waitaki County Council, Waitaki Electric Power Board, Oamaru Harbour Board, and Waitaki Hospital Board, of which bodies he i 8 now a sitting member Mr J.; D. Rutherford will seek re-election to the Waitaki County Council and Waitaki Electric Power Board, and Mr E. S. Brewster to the Waitaki County Council and Oamaru Harbour Board. Mr W. E. Aubrey will again be a candidate for the Waitaki County Council, and is also contesting the Land Board election for the seat heM by Mr Livingstone ag Crown tenants representative. Cr W. M. Cooper will seek re-election to tlie Waitaki, County Council, but he will he opposed by Mr S. M. Taylor, formerly stock inspector of Oamaru, now residing at Alma, who has intimated that he will offer his services to the ratepayers of the Kakanui Riding. Owing to his absence each year in Australia, Mr J. M. Smith has intimated that he will retire from the Waitaki County Council at the end of the present term, as representative for the Incholme Riding. . In the Oamaru Harbour Board election Mr C. J. Marshall will again be a candidate, and Mr MTnnes will meet opposition at the hands of Mr J. S. Adams for the Kurow and Otekaike distriets, while it is reported that Mr H. H. Meredith, the Wairaate County Council s nominee, will be opposed for the seat representing the ratepayers of the Waxhao district. Cr R. B. Meek will again seek re-election as representative, of the Waiareka Riding on the Waitaki County Council, but is at present considering the position jn regard to his seat on the Oamaru Harbour Board and on the Waitaki Electric Rower Board. Early on Thursday morning a fire occurred in a small hut at Papakaio, owned and occupied by Mr John Cameron, and the building and contents were a' complete loss. The hut was insured with the Loyal Insurance Company for £25, and the contents for £35.

In the final of the Awamoa Lawn Tennis Club’s championship. Miss Humphries (holder) defeated Mrs Bradley 2—6, 6 —3, 7 —5, after an interesting match. Yesterday afternoon Messrs Mulligan and Forbes, acting under the instructions of the Public Trustee, as executor in the .estatb of the late Mrs F., M. E. Murray, offered the property on the corner of Thames and Orwell streets at public auction. The property was passed in at £950, subject to the’ trustee’s approval. With the arrival of a few salmon at the Waitaki dam on Thursday, a good deal of interest ; was displayed as to whether the fish would use the new ladder to get-to their spawning beds further upstream. The salmon were closely watched, but none was seen to use the ladder. However, as salmon move more in the evenings and, early mornings than they do in the daytime, no disappointment has been felt that they have not used the ladder so far. A message was received from Mr S., Spiers yesterday ; that, he was successful in securing two first awards, one seconds and also a first for non-sporting brace with his Scottish terriers from the Glen Shee, kennels, at the Greymouth Dog Show.

The North Otago Highland Pipe Band held a successful street appeal for its new uniforms fund in Oamaru yesterday, when various booths in Thames streetrdid good business. It was, perhaps, unfortunate that the heavy rain came when it did, as it stopped people coming into town Nevertheless, the appeal was well responded to, and the fund should be augmented by a large amount as a result of the untiring efforts of the badge-sellers. •
