THE RETURNS FOR JANUARY LONDON, February 14. (Received Feb. 15, at 5.5 p.m.) The Board of Trade returns for January are as follows: Imports, £61,931,000. Exports, £35,481,000. Re-exports, £5,034,000. The principal increases compared with January of last year are as follows : IMPORTS. Rubber, £904,000. Non-ferrous metals and manufactur- 3, £455,000. EXPORTS. Coal, £308,000. Iron and steel and manufactures thereof, £405,000. Non-ferrous metals and manufactures thereof, £310,000. Machinery, £588,000. Cotton yams manufactures, £342,000. Woollen worsted manufactures, £214,000. Chemicals and drugs, £353,000. The decreases are as follows: IMPORTS. Other food, £1,653,000. Wool, £2,653,000. Hides and skins, £345,000. Oils, fats, resin and manufactures, £295,000. EFFECT ON STOCK EXCHANGE (British Official Wireless.l RUGBY, February 14. (Received Feb. 15, at 5.5 p.m.) ' A more optimistic feeling prevails on the Stock Exchange following the encouraging Board of Trade figures, this being exceptionally noticeable in the Home industrials sections. British Government stocks are strong. THE RETURNS ANALYSED , ’ LONDON, February 15, (Received Feb. 16, at 1 a.m.) The Daily Express’s city editor, analysing the Board .of Trade returns, says: “ British countries overseas are still Britain’s, best customers. India’s purchases in 1934 totalled £36.500,000, South Africa £30,250,000, Australia £26,250,000, and Canada £19,750,000 compared with the United States £17,125,000, France £16,750,000, and the Argentine £14,763,000. The Empire’s purchases from Britain in 1934 showed an increase of £21,000,000 over 1933, and foreigners’ purchases increased by £6,000,000.”
