Weather The exceptionally hot weather which has been experienced here throughout the summer months broke yesterday, when a light rain commenced to fall in the late afternoon and continued intermittently throughout the night. The rain was needed, and has greatly freshened the countryside. Repairs to Race A recent waterspout at Springvale caused the Public Works Department officials considerable anxiety, as the water races were silted up to a depth of five and six feet for some distance. This necessitated the water being cut oil this area for about 10 days,, a very serious matter to the settlers who are served by the scheme. The department had every available man in the district employed on the race to have it put in order as quickly as possible. This has now been accomplished, but it will be some time before permanent repairs can be effected. Bowling Matches for the local Championship Singles are progressing. Recent games resulted as follows: —W. Hewitt 21, J. H. Timmings 18; A. ». Hamilton 21, J. Provan 16: T. E. Sunderland 21, A. I. Milne 8. Hamilton and Sunderland still have two lives in the competition. Cool Storage of Fruit Large quantities of fruit are still being put in the local freezing works for cool storage, and apricots are now being re leased for market from the store. These, after being in cool store for some weeks, are opening up in excellent condition, and are realising satisfactory prices at the market. Personal Mr J. R. Hand, of the Public Trust Office staff, Palmerston North, who has been spending his annual leave with his parents, returned to Palmerston North yesterday. Mr G. H. Prater, of the Pensions Department, Christchurch, is at present spending his annual leave with his parents at Earnscleugh.
