Two days after the hatching of the young muttonbird, said Mr Stead, the parents left the nest, returning at night to feed the young bird until about April, when it would be pumped full of shrimps and left. The baby bird would then be covered with a very soft and deep down, and would weigh about 31b, approximately twice the weight of its parents. The bird would stav in the nest for sonic time, turning fat into feathers, until it had lost about 60 per cent, of ita weight, and waa able to take to the wing.
