Author Into Politican Commenting on the striking, but unsuccessful, campaign of Mr Upton Sinclair for gubernatorial honours in California the Saturday Review of Literature (New York) states: —Whatever may be the ultimate significance or practicality of Mr Sinclair’s programme, there. is certainly an immediate significance in his nomination, which emphatically exemplifies the potentialities of an author’s career. The current political scene has recruited many of its protagonists from academic life, and of these many have been authors of books; but, perhaps, none of them provides so striking an example as Mr Sinclair of the transition from literature, so to speak, to life. And in the past the transition has usually gone the other way round. The retired statesman or diplomatist, writing a book of memoirs or opinions, is a familiar figure. Mr Sinclair’s way is more unusual, and infinitely more dramatic. Scottish Place Names Forty years ago James B. Johnston published “Place Names of Scotland,” which was recognised as the standard work on this subject. A second and revised edition was later issued. Since then the science of topography has made large advances in Scotland, as elsewhere, and John Murray will issue shortly a new and enlarged edition of this work. Celtic, Norse, English, ecclesiastical, mediaeval, and modern names are ail dealt with in a comprehensive manner.
