BOY KILLED BY LIFT TERRIBLE INJURIES INFLICTED. (Per United Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 16. William Kyle, a boy of 14, was killed instantly this morning by being crushed bitween'the .floors in a goods lift where he was working. It is believed that somebody on the floor above pulled the cable to bring the lift up, and that the youth made an effort to scramble on. As the lift rose his hea.d was caught, and terribly injured. He fell 20!t to the basement. , KILLED BY FALL OF EARTH (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 16. Receiving severe injuries when he was buried by a fall of earth, C. Rosait’er died in the Wellington Hospital to-day. Rossiter was working at Titahi Pay when the accident occurred yesterday morning. His right leg, ribs, and collarbone were broken and he suffered shock.and injuries to his back. He received medical, attention and was taken to hospital in the free ambulance. Blue, of Bluecliffs, who was riding a motor cycle with Stanley Stocker, came into collision with a motor car driven by James Calhoun Kay, a law clerk, of Timaru, on. the Esk Valley road between .1.30 and. 2 a.m. Waite who received a compound fracture of the lower right thigh and numerous fractures of the lower right deg, died in the Timaru Hospital at 9.15, DEATH OF A CHILD' •v INQUEST OPENED. An inquiry was opened yesterday afternoon by the coroner (Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.), into the circumstances surrounding the death of Evelyn Hastie, a child five years of age, who was knocked down by a car at Ravensburne on Wednesday, and died in the Dunedin Hospital on Thursday night. The child’s father, Oliver William Hastie, said that his daughter was brought to his house by Mr Middleton i at 4.15 p.m. on Thursday in an injured condition. He laid the child on a bed and tried to get Dr Fulton, who was out. He therefore took her to the Dunedin Hospital in Mr Middleton’s car. Mr Middleton told witness that the girl was knocked down by a car driven by him. The father added that his residence fronted the Main road at Rav.nsbourne. His two children were never allowed out on the road to play, but on this occasion, and in childish curiosity, they ran across the road to see the express go past. Dr A. G. Gumming, a house surgeon at the Hospital, described the child’s injuries, and stated that an operation ! was performed by-Mr Jenkins at 8 p.m. on the day of her admission with temporary amelioration of the symptoms. The child became progressively worse and died at 11.45 p.m. the following day. In his opinion the cause of death was comatose asphyxia due to cerebral iuemonbage and fracture of the skull.
