Stating that ho had the offer of a position with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, Harry Sergeant, aged 20, of Hamilton, pleaded guilty before Mr Wyvern Wilson, to stowing away on the Monterey at Auckland on October 5. The police verified the statement of the accused that lie had letters from Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and said that the youth's mother, who was in poor circumstances, had come from Hamilton to help her eon. The'magistrate ordered the youth to come up for sentence if called upon. PAHIATUA, October 20. Justices of the peace sentenced an old offender, John Tempest Colyer, aged 38, to 12 months' imprisonment for indecent exposure at Tiraumea. CHRISTCHURCH, October 20. Following a raid by detectives this morning, George Berry, of New Brighton, was charged with keeping a common gaming house and was fined £3O by the magistrate (Mr H. A. Young). " The police said that all the paraphernalia of bookmaking was found at the house, and that the defendant was taking bets when he was arrested.
