FIRE ON STEAMER

TOP SPEED TO PORT FIREMEN SUBDUE OUTBREAK LONDON, October 1. For the past three days the Italian steamer Leopardi has been steaming at top speed for London with fire smouldering in one of her holds. The fire was discovered when the vessel was approaching the Bay of Biscay, and the master (Captain Sperber) ordered the hold to be battened down and steam pumped into it to obviate the risk of the outbreak bursting into flame. Captain Sperber wirelessed London asking that the fire brigade should be in attendance when the ship berthed at Bermondsey early this morning. Firemen immediately boarded the vessel, and were engaged for nearly four hours before the outbreak was finally got under control.
