DRESSING FOR THE DUKE
HEART-SEARCHING IN SYDNEY There is heart-searching in Sydney about the clothing to be worn during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester, There is reluctance to wear conventional morning coat, striped trousers, and tall hat. A few people expect that the time will come when the conditions of the “ eighties,” as known in Melbourne rather than in Sydney, will return, and leading citizens will be seen about town in “ belltoppers.” Some would welcome this (says the Sydney correspondent of the Melbourne Argus) but not many. The thought among those who ordinarily would not wear anything but sac suits and soft felt hats is that it would be a needless expense to buy the “ Royal Ascot outfit.” Those who know England say that they would prefer the easy styles of Goodwood, and they have no ‘doubt that the Duke would also. Nevertheless, spurred by their womenfolk, they accept the situation with a sigh and agree to see their tailors. It seems to be a great expense to incur for something that may be worn only once or twice. One man says that he can face the cost smilingly, for ho will wear the clothing on two or more occasions, going to Melbourne for the centenary to halve, as it were, the cost of appearances in fashionable dress. His mathematics are smiled at, but others may adopt his plan.
