Miss Leonore Mackenzie, who judged the elocution, said the choice of pieces on the whole was very good. It was most important in the "own selection" to choose works of good literary merit. She was pleased to see the boys coming forward so well. Competitors should try to cultivate a more reposeful manner on the stage. The character recital was an exceptionally' good section, and the costumes very. good. The general speech was of a high standard and.showed signs of sound teaching. Miss. Mackenzie said it gave her pleasure to be present and.to see so many competitors. She was agreeably surprised at the talent shown. Mr C. Roy Spackman (judge of the vocal, violin, and piano. sections) said he noted a % great improvement since last year's festival. Pieces on £he whole were well chosen and played with a fair idea of interpretation. The piano duets —for which there was a larger entry than last year—were good. Memorising work was surprisingly good, and yery few mistakes were noted. He was well pleased with all the competitors. It was hard to judge the " own selection " pieces as there bad been a large variety of—from easy .to difficult—pieces chosen; He recommended something more uniform. The following are the officers:—Mr F. J. Ferry (president); Messrs L. B. Borrow, A. F, Cheyne, and W. Campbell (members of committee); Mr F. W. C. Walsleben (treasurer); Mr E. J. Mason (secretary); and Mr E. O. Taylor (auditor).
