PORT CHALMERS NEWS
MUSSEL BAY DRAINAGE Advice has been received from the Board of Health that the recent meeting decided to issue a requisition on' the Port Chalmers Borough Council to proceed with the Mussel Bay drainage. This action, which was at the request of the council, will save considerable time in arranging the necessary finance to carry out the work required at the reclamation, The Loans Board will, no doubt, arrange the details of the loan, which will be granted without the necessity of a poll of the ratepayers being taken. The borough engineer has already been instructed to proceed with the preliminary work of laying the levels, etc., and it is expected that the work will now proceed with more speed than has been the case lately. BY-PRODUCT PLANT There is every prospect of a fish byproduct plant being erected on the foreshore at Carey Bay, where fish offal could be converted into fertiliser and placed on the market. It is stated that fish meal and odourless oil are likely to be also manufactured. Should the project bo carried into effect, it would mean that when the fish market was glutted, which is often the case during the summer months, the fishermen would be able to send all surplus supplies to the by-product: plant.
