RHODES SCHOLARSHIP

OTAGO NOMINEES TWO CANDIDATES SELECTED The Otago nominees for the Rhodes Scholarship for this year were announced last night by the Professorial Board of the University of Otago. . The candidates whose names will be sent forward to the Selection Committee are: DAVIN. DANIEL MARCUS MOLLER, LESTER FRANCIS. Six applications came before the board. .The names of the nominees are given in aphabetical order. Mr Davin was born on September 1, 1013, and was educated at the Marist Brothers' primary and high schools at Invercargill. In 1926 he was dux of the primary school and two years later he gained first place for Southland in the Public Service Entrance examination. He was dux of the secondary school in 1029 and the following year went to the Sacred Heart College at Auckland with a scholarship. He came to the Otago University in 1931. Debating and dramatic work attracted his attention while at the Marist Brothers’ High School and at the University he occupied the office of secretary to the Literary and Dramatic Society, was part organiser and first president of the Arts Faculty Debating Society, was connected with the two University publications, the Critic and the Review, vice-president of the Arts Faculty executive, secretary of the Literary and Debating Society, and vice-president of the newly-formed Literary Society. He also took a keen interest in all forms of sport both at the Marist Brothers’ School and the University, playing football, cricket, lawn tennis, and taking a prominent part in amateur athletics. _ In 1929 he won the boxing championship of the Marist Brothers’ High School, and, during vacations, he goes in for shooting and swimming. He proposes to take the Greats course at Oxford for his B.A. degree, and hopes to take up teaching work in the Dominion after concluding his course at Oxford. Mr Moller was dux of the Normal School in 1925 at the age of _l2 years, and entered the Otago Boys’ High School in 1926 with a Junior National Scholarship. He gained a Senior National Scholarship in 1927 and matriculated in 1928. In 1930 he was head prefect and dux of the school, winning a University Entrance Scholarship and also the Gene-

ral Harry Fulton Memorial Scholarship for sport and class work. He was a member of the school First Fifteen, feather-weight boxing champion, regimental sergeant-major, runner-up for the gymnastic championship, and a member of the school athletic team. He entered Otago University in 1931, and is now sitting for the final section of his LL.B. degree, having first class terms in general subjects and being the winner of the Law Society’s prizes in contracts, crimes, torts, and trusts. He has taken a keen interest in University dramatic affairs and was for two years organiser of the capping concerts. He has also been very prominent in University debating, and in 1933 was a member of the successful Joynt Scroll team, being placed second best speaker for New Zealand. Mr Holier has also held many administrative positions, being for four years a member of the Law Faculty Committee, and is now vice-president. He is president of the Law Debating Society, secretary of the Dramatic and, ns representative of intellectual affairs on the students’ executive, was for the past year censor of the Critic and editor of the University Review, in which periodical he has had original prose and poetry published. He has also been prominent In University sporting eix’des. playing Second Grade cricket and football, and was for two years feather-weight boxing champion, winning his boxing blue on each occasion as a member of the tournament team.

PAST OTAGO RHODES SCHOLARS Students from the University of Otago who have won Rhodes Scholarships are: — J. A. Thomson (1904), New Zealand’s first Rhodes Scholar, specialised in the field of geology. He was director of the Dominion Museum at the time of his death in 1928. R. A. Farquharsoii (1900) is now director of agriculture and geologist to the British Somaliland Protectorate. Before going to Somaliland he was petrologist to the West Australian Government. C. M. Gilray (1007) was until recently principal of John M’Glashan College, Dunedin. He ig now head of Scotch College, Melbourne. F. F. Miles (1913) was a master at Wanganui Collegiate School for a number years, and is now acting professor of mathematics at Victoria College. H. J. Kyburn (1921) has been for some years minister of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Dunedin. E. A Porritt (1923) is practising medicine in London, and is a recognised authority on sport. R. S. Aitken (1924) graduated M. 8., Ch.B., at Otago, and after taking his BA. at Oxford, continued his medical studies further at’ London. Tic is now attached to one of the large hospitals there. C. A. Sharp (1927) is at present in Southland on furlough from service with the Burmese Government. W. E. Henley (1928) was in New Zealand this year, but returned to Oxford to complete bis medical studies. J. C. Dakin (1929) went to Uganda as an assistant commissioner in the Colonial Service after studying at Oxford. J. E. Lovelock (1030), of athletic fame, recently came down from Oxford and is studying medicine at one of the London hospitals. G. S. Cox (1931) is still at Oxford, and N. Davis (1933) left New Zealand recently for Home.
