PERSONAL AND SOCIAL

It is this afternoon that the long-looked-forward-to home economics display will be held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall, and this evening that the old-time dress parade will take place. The proceeds - are to help to pay for a qualified student to be at the Extension Bureau’ office so that any woman in Dunedin or the country need only write or telephone her need to the Extension Bureau at the University and receive help.

The September social of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Association was held in the Unity Chambers, Stuart street, on Saturday. Mr A. Pemberton presided over a good attendance of members and friends. The programme commenced with the grand march and circular waltz. Vocal items were contributed by Miss A. M'Arthur, Miss Simm, and Mr Longworth. The male chorus party was also heard in a number of old songs. Mrs Orr gave two elocutionary items, which were greatly appreciated, and Mrs Swift gave a reading in dialect. Community singing was enjoyed until supper time, after which dancing took place.

Composition is perhaps the most fascinating branch of musical study. The feeling of having done something that nobody else ever did before is a source of gratification to everyone who successfully accomplishes hie purpose. There is in the musically-inclined a faculty of tone expression of which unheard melodies are made to assume a living and audible entity. To develop this faculty or rather shape its expression in a methodical and appreciable fashion the'Society of Musicians of Otago, M.T.A., Otago branch, will bold _ a composers’ evening on Saturday evening in Begg’s Concert Chamber. These evenings have been held with considerable success previously, and many very commendable efforts have been the result. Compositions to be presented are from Otago musicians comprising an interesting programme of instrumental and vpcal works. The components parts of musical composition, rhythm, melody, and harmony, three elements which express the deepest feeling of man’s heart and life, will be reproduced in original compositions by J. C. Easton, Charles A. Martin, Mary Martin, D. A. Ballantyne, Tracy Moresby. Vernon Griffiths, j. C. M'Evoy, and Sophie Hall. Vocalists and instrumentalists assisting jn the performance of these works are Xoni Davidson. Ruby Price, May Teviotdale, B. R. Benton, Cecil Hawes, an instrumental trio consisting of Misses E. Wallace, M. M'Cormack, and E. Wycherly, Mr J. Wallace’s orchestra, and a ladies’ choir under John T. Leech.
